Educational Norris on Ebay *LINK*

>Although interest in pre-owned infills is evidently low these days, this offering might be worth a comment or two. As I write, the auction has 3 days 18 hours left and has reached $862! If any of you think I'm ruining some great unnoticed bargain that you planned to snipe up for yourself at the last minute, please contact me off line. I have similar objects that I can offer to you at market value plus $500.

By all appearances the ebay-linked plane is an ordinary post-war Norris with "engine turning". It sure looks to be beech, not rosewood...as a couple write-ins point out. I'm thinking it may be cast, not dovetailed. The decorative side finish is missing from the top and bottom, suspiciously looking like the result of grinding off corrosive pitting. I got quite a smile out of reading the two "questions for seller" dated 10-17.

Anyway, I believe that following this auction to its bitter end will provide me with considerable entertainment and education, both about Norris planes as well as the proclivities of my fellow man. I just wanted to give a few of you the same opportunity.

>Looks like a nice crisp plane that only saw the most minimal if any use and doesn't look like it was ever fooled with apparently unlike most infills on the market. I think that is why it is going for the price it is, tools like this always sell high......Hard to go wrong when you buy something in this condition .....Todd

>Shills are friends of the seller who either bid up the item (in the hope that an unsuspecting biddre will top them. or in the case of ebay pose questions that when posted make the item look better than it is.

And the winner is ....

WoodburnBob

>Well, I did watch this until the end, the final price being about $880. Having nothing better to do this cold and windy afternoon, I took a look at the prior buying habits of some of the bidders and the winner.

This was about the screwiest Norris auction I've ever seen.

The winner had about 20 auction results, consisting entirely of toys for a couple bucks a piece, records of similar price and "gramaphone" supplies. But perhaps the winner was Big Daddy Warbucks bidding on Annie's account.

>I don't know if you noticed this but on normal ebay auctions - the final price reflects a flurry of bidding at the end as most serious collectors snipe at the end. On this one the final bid was placed a day before the end of the auction - and there were no snipers - showing that serious collectors all realized that this auction was fishy.

Not only that, but ...

WoodburnBob

>if you look at the other merchandise the seller sells (thrift store stuff: old printed material, cute little porcelain figures and fifty year old records...all in the $5 to $10 range) and what the winner buys (similar thrift store stuff), you can't help but have the sense of people of the same species, same family, perhaps even same identity. Indeed, 7 times the seller has already praised the winner with successfully completed transactions. Alas, sometimes I imagine myself an investigative journalist or private eye. I'd better get myself back to reality.
