Spec on Ray Iles A5 Smoother needed

Lyn J. Mangiameli

>I need a favor from several of you who have access to a Ray Iles A5 smoothing plane (original Norris A5 info would be interesting too). I need to know the distance (preferably in mm) from the front of the sole to the front edge of the mouth, that is, how far back on the sole before the mouth gap begins. If possible, I'd also like to know the approximate year of manufacture of the plane.

The reason I'm asking is that I have the specification for a Ray Iles I used for quite some time, but a recent report from another owner of a Ray Iles A5 gave a significantly different figure. I need to know which spec is most typical and get a sense of whether it is a quality control variation or a design change. The most valid information is to get some direct readings from delivered planes. The info will be helpful for a little report I'm finishing up.

You can post here or email me directly. My TIA

>Distance is 1 & 31/32--almost 2" exactly. (Dail calipher)

Purchased in June 2004 from Joel in NYC--so my guess is manufactured in 2004.

Norris 5 Sole Dimensions

Steve Elliott

>Here's a scan of the sole of a Norris 5 that was made after about 1928 and before WWII:

I've sold this plane, but I believe the overall length of the sole is 195 mm and the distance from the toe to the edge of the throat opening is 51 mm. This is based both on the scan and on the dimensions of a Norris 4 I still own.

The plane shown here has a 2-1/4" blade, and the size of the sole of a plane with a 2-1/8" blade is smaller in every dimension. I believe the Iles planes have a 2-1/8" blade, and the dimensions of the corresponding Norris are 186 mm overall length and 50 mm from toe to mouth opening.

Glad to hear you're finishing up your little report.

No help, sorry, but a question

Denis Chénard, Orléans, Ont.

>How good is that plane? Compared to other infills? To Clifton, LN or LV of similar size?

Just curious,

>Well, today I was working some more on getting a little report together that will give you some comparative information. I'm sorry but I think it will offer you better information than I provide you in this context.

I get 2", or 50mm

Ted Owen, Pittsburgh

>Because of variations, it's best to have Joel help choose a specific blade and mouth combination for the type of work one does. Not sure that means distance from front to mouth varies, but I'll bet they do a bit.

Joel would know.

Best, Ted

>Mine measures out at just short of 2 inches (about 1/64th to 1/32 short).
