Sauer Grapes

Darrell in Oakville

>I went to the Tools Of The Trade show and sale on Oct 2nd. Met a bunch of other hand tool afflictionados, had lunch at the Whatever & Firkin, bought a few tools and just generally enjoyed myself.

Stopped by Konrad's table to say Hi. I did my best "Wow look over there!" schtick, and slipped my Aluminum & Basswood infill smoother in amongst the elegant and superb Sauer & Steiner planes. Whooo that's U G L Y !! Sorry Konrad, just plane a joke on ya! He looked the plane over and said something to the effect of Wow, that is the nastiest plane I have ever seen.

I wonder if it would sell if I put it on EBay?

>You're missing the most important point. In tools, handsome is as handsome does. How does it WORK? Did you compare its performance to Konrad's planes? Now, I have theories about the performance one might expect, considering the differences in mass, density and stiffness of the materials, length of the infill support, and last but not least, the thinness of your blade. However, there are lots of other considerations in plane performance, for example manufacturing tolerances and blade temper, that cannot be judged from a low resolution photo.

OTOH, even on a moonless night, any self-respecting alley cat would easily detect it's trajectory in time to make an evasive maneuver, and even if struck, would shrug off the blow and quickly resume making horrid noises.

It's a good start. It probably works superbly on linden. Hopefully, you are planning to build another one, for planing more difficult woods, in the future.

>Darrell,

Whilst it wouldn't many awards if placed in a show with those other planes, or any other makers for that matter (well, except maybe for Ernie*) I still think it pretty neat. It not that it's a bad planer, it's just that you haven't found the right wood for it yet. ;~) I'd keep it if i was you just for the memories. Use it as a paper weight or pencil sharpener something. If nothing else, once you become a dead, and famous plane maker your heir(s) could sell it off as your Proto-type for big $$$$$$.

*for those that are new here, our own Ernie made, IIRC a smoother #4 sized plane out of a piece of channel iron. I think I still have a picture of it somewhere on disk.

My plane is awful. Chatters. Chokes. Massive tearout. Uncomfortable to hold. It's right up there with my Rusty Shelton for winning the Worst Plane In My Shop award. I've used Konrad's panel plane (just to the left of my plane in the photo) several times. Man oh man, that is an AWESOME plane. Even when the iron is dull it planes the nastiest wood with easy grace and leaves a perfect surface.

>Well, at least you have done your part to debunk the legend that there is just something magical about infills that makes them outperform any other plane under the sun :^)

With what you've learned about physics, materials, and workmanship from this one, I do hope you try again, and build one that is both a work of art and a superb tool.

>I'll have you know that plane sold for $100.00 in the katrina auction not bad if I say so myself. Don't go kicking me unless you were steel toed boots. as I have thick skin. Wait till you see the next one I'm working on. It will make you laugh so hard you will blow coffee out your nose on your monitor. A picture is on the Benefit board of that plane Todd.
