Are these saw's any good

Ed L

>Both these Disston saws are about 20 yrs old 1 is a Back saw K-1 12 piont 12" blade (dull won't cut butter) and 1 is a D-23 8 piont 26" blade crosscut. I'm just starting working with hand tools and I know most good old tools have to be like from WW2 or older to be good. I was hoping the back saw could get sharped and if it would be good for dovetails

Yes

>This is an excellent place to start because the cost of your tools is $0. Start with the backsaw. Search the archives for info on how to sharpen. All you need is a triangular file. By the time you sharpen it down to a nubbin, you will be ready for a fine antique tool. By then you will be a dovetail master.

>Even after WWII, while Disston was throwing everything into the dumpster that they had learned over the previous century about aesthetics and ergonomic grips, they continued to improve their steels. One warning: Recent saws use steels designed for induction hardening of the teeth, which are very difficult to resharpen. Once you do get past the hardened teeth, they won't hold an edge. I don't know about these particular saws. Their labels should tell you. Since you're a woodworker, you can fix the problems with the uncomfortable grips, if they bother you.
