Lie Nielsen Low Angle Jointer Plane Blades

>Hey Guys,

Not sure if you've seen this lately - there a guy who's been selling LN LA jointer plane blades on eBay for around $10 to $12 each. I'm interested but am not sure if there's anything wrong with them. I've queried it with him and his reply was the blades were stamped Lie Nielsen USA. He doesn't know anymore.

I'm thinking this guy has gotten hold of a batch load of pre A2 steel irons and is now dribbiling them onto the market.

Seems like cheap iron to have as spares...

What do you think?

>Hi Rich,

I can't really say whether the blades are real or fake, but as far as I know Lie-Nielsen didn't stamp their name on pre-A2 (O1) blades, so if they're real they're A2.

>Rich, funny you should bring it up I just recieved one yesterday from that guy on ebay. It was kinda rusty but not enough to effect it's use, it cleaned up ok. It is the same size as my original LA jionter blade but not as thick. The ebay one is 3/16 thick and the LN one is a 1/64 shy of 1/4 thick. I'm curious where he got them from, the name looks identical but that could be copied. Also the finish is different, the LN is shiny and smooth where as the ebay is dull in appearance and sorta rough looking. Maybe a LN prototype? Anyway, I need to sharpen it and give it a try. If if holds an edge like the LN then I made out for 10.00 total including shipping and if it's a dud well then I'm only out ten bucks.

>Why don't you contact Thomas Lie-Nielsen about this and ask him? I'm sure he would be more than interested. You should be prepared to share with him the eBayer's particulars. You might also want to be prepared to send him the blade, so he has some physical evidence. If there is any funny business going on, I'm sure he would want to know about it, and would want to discuss it with eBay management. I'm also sure he would be appreciative of your effort and interest.

Personally, I could not imagine Lie-Nielsen intentionally letting any seconds or obsolete stock, or scrap, or whatever, out onto the market. It just does not make any sense from a quality or customer service or brand recognition or any other point of view.

Keep the rest of us in the loop as you work through this. Some of us might also be interested in a link to the eBay offer, to help us better understand what is being offered.

>Do you think someone is dumpster diving for parts that didn't meet quality standards? I guess as long as the eBayer lists it as "new old stock" then the savy buyer should realize that it is salvaged and obsolete, whatever the procurement channel.

>I sent Lie-Nielsen an e-mail about these blades and received the following response from Tom--

"Thanks for the email. It seems some of our early 7 1/2 blades, ones we made before we decided to go 3/16" thick, were taken home by a worker in the blade shop for his personal use. He died last fall and the next thing I knew someone called to say they were a the local landfill. I got as many as I could but not before some enterprising person took some. They are not finish ground for sure and don't look like they were heat treated either. I don't consider it legit at all ;-) We are very careful about our scrap.

Best,

THomas"
