>I'm always curious when an opening bid is $5 and the final bid is $14,000, whether I'm witnessing supreme confidence or dumb luck.

>Probably dumb luck in this case. If there are no comparables, who'd quess it would be worth anywhere near this amount.

Some kind of collector...

Scott in Douglassville, PA

>Look at the last couple auctions he won. Not exactly small price tags there, either.

>Apparently, this is another of those subcultures. Somewhere, I've seen an online pencil sharpener museum, and the one sold on eBay is typically large, ornate, and over-engineered for the task.

I guess, if this is one of the few examples by this maker, that it's worth it to someone. Me, I'll stick with my Stanley rock knife.

>IIRC,(and I probably don't) I think I saw in the Gristmaill that the record price for a pencil sharpener was around $10,000. This one looks similar but in much better condition.

>What always surprises me is not that there is a collector willing to pay so much, it is that there are at least two collectors wiling to pay (roughly) that much, and the both noticed and bid on it.

Saw an article on these

Eric Hedberg

>These sharpeners are highly coveted and harder to find than a lot of the "toys" we desire. It was a pretty remarkable piece for the condition and the box. Not my cup of tea, but I sure would like to have been the person who found it in my attic. Eric (Wondering if Mr. Lee is secretly starting an antique office supply collection in preparation for the new Veritas office tool line. Now what sharpens a pencil better low angle or high angle, A2 or HSS? Hmmmmm?)

Have you tried to find a decent sharpener lately?

Ed Snow

>I have one that works okay, and will usually point a pencil quite well. However, in my primary studio the one there is terrible and it is a replacement as I complained so much about the one that was there.

It could be the pencils but since they sharpen well in mine I think it is still the sharpener. It makes me mad, grrrrr.

Good reason to carry a pocket knife

Jim Reed@Tallahassee

>I sharpen all my shop pencils with a knife. It does a good job and is great carving practice.

>You mean other than, "If you have pockets you need a knife in at least one of them."
