A Lie Nielsen Ball Peen Hammer?

Joel Casto

>I just received the 2006 Lie Nielsen catalog. While looking through for new stuff I noticed a tool in a picture of the butt mortise plane (page 24) lying on the bench. It looks like a minature bronze ball peen hammer with a magnifiying glass? What the...?

I don't have a way to scan the picture or I would post if for you.

Could this be a new tool from LN or just a cruel lark? I mean, if LN is going to make a new tool, how about some short panel saws or an updated Stanley 50 combination beader, preferably bronze.

>Wow,

It looks like a gizmo to my inexperienced eye. Does anyone know what it's used for (like a ball peen?), or if it's any good? Hard to imagine a magnifying glass on a hammer, seems kind of like putting sunglasses on a baseball bat. Any info appreciated.

Had mine for years. Essential tool.

>Although I don't use it so much as before, that and a center punch, a scribe and my Starrett combi square virtually lived in my hands. Consider a finely scribed line along a piece of Dykem blued metal with crossing lines at varying intervals. Looking through the magnifier until the punch is dead on, you tap, next intersection, tap. Excellent tool. Well-balanced, too.

I'd Prefer That #289 he Owes Us...

>Even with my Pavlovian 'open wallet/order' response to new offerings from Warren, ME, I can't get excited about saws - too many nice ones still available for $15, and no real way to improve performance over the prototypes.

I could get pumped over a #289, or at least a LV-like re-take (dual-rod fence, skewed bullnose blade, comfortable handle, etc). There are more than a few of us that have watched #289 prices escalate, and wondered when Tom was going to be badgered into at least a limited production run.

I cannot understand

Jim Reed @ Tallahassee

>why someone has not made a skew rabbet like the #289. It is such a nice plane to use and impossibly expensive for the user. No need to reach for the noisy, messy tailed router when all you need is a few rabbets.

Yep. Which is why I gave up long ago and found a great wood moving fillister. Still plenty available at a reasonable price.

I should also mention...

David Barnett - Venice, Florida

>The magnifier is positioned in line with the head, so it's very natural to keep the eye fixed on point while raising the poll to striking position above the punch. Much faster than an optical center punch and nearly as accurate.

>Agree - a great tool, and def headed up in price. I'm likely to get more use these days out of a 100, but I am still kicking myself for selling the #289 a few years ago.
