What a rasp! Homemade!

Denis Chénard, Orléans, Ont.

>I changed my bandsaw blade tonight, after doing a boo-boo, I forgot to put the tension back on, and the blade caught somewhere in the saw and got kinked...

I remembered reading in an old issue of FWW a tip about cutting discarded BS blades in one foot sections or so, and taping them together to make a rasp. I had three other blades that I never got around to throw in the garbage (all 1/2" 3 TPI), so I cut them all and assembled them together, taking care to stagger the teeth, and holding them together with duct tape.

Man, does this thing ever cut! I don't think I'll ever need to buy a rasp... With hardly any pressure I get a relatively smooth cut, but when I press down I can "eat" a piece of wood in no time!

Glad I finally made one...

>Well than Denis, sounds like you just saved a bunch of money, which should justify the expense of a new tool. :~) Take half of what it would of cost you to buy some of those big $$$ rasps and buy a

"New to you tool" If halk is not enough, than make another homemade rasp using a different tool size, and add in another half.

Sounds perfecly ratinal to me.

>I find my rasps mainly get used for concave shapes, since convex and flat can be done with other tools. Does it look like it would be possible to get a half-round shape with your bandsaw blades?

Works well with hacksaw blades, too.

>Maybe even better for the really fine stuff. I've had a couple of these around at for years. One trick is to reverse every two blades so you can 'scrub' in either direction.

Here's one, Bob

>16 inches or so in length, 24 blade segments, gives a 5/8" wide cut.

There's about 9 1/2" of exposed blades between the "handles".

Apologies if the picture is a bit fuzzy, my camera isn't the best at close-ups (or it might be the operator...).
