3V Plane Irons - long
Phil Smith
>Last spring Bill and I got a request by a couple of west coast WC members, Steve Elliot and Wiley Horne about interest in making some 3V plane irons. Bill and I had talked about making some 3V irons for our LN and Clifton planes and this was a good excuse to finally make some irons. Our previous work with 3V was with common hand tools, but making more that a couple of irons was way too much work for hand tools. I recuited a fellow woodworker and machinest, Bruce Norton to do the machineing of the plane irons. After discussions with Steve and Wiley we arrived a specifications for both infill irons and irons for LN no. 4 and Clifton no. 5 planes and agreed on a number. The only trick with Bruce's shop is that we had to move all of his machine and woodworking equipment into the basement of the new house and install the rotary 3 phase converter before machine work could begin.
The tools are all moved and the milling machine is up and running and Bruce has completed the initial machine work and the plane irons are ready for heat treating. We will surface grind the plane irons after heat treating.
There are 25 plane irons for infill, LN No. 4 and Clifton No. 5 planes. Along the way other local woodworkers have made additional hand tools. We have a variety of chisels, turning tools, knives, etc.
All but 4 of the plane irons are 3V. Bruce and I made 4 M4 plane irons to see if it will hold an edge better than the 3V.
I have attached a picture of the plane irons for Steve and Wiley. I will post the additional plane irons and other tools in a separate post.
