Question about plow planes?

John Clifford

>I'm looking a buying at plow plane and am interested in the record 043 and 044 or possibly the stanley no. 50. Any owners of these planes out there willing to give their oppions? I'm leaning toward the two records over the stanley only b/c the late Jim Kingshott seemed to speak highly of them in his specialty planes video and they looked to work really well. I appreciate any and all input. Thanks, John.

>I got an 044.I find it to be an easy to use, handy tool.I use it mostly for drawer bottom grooves. The 043 is an earlier version that has fewer cutters and is a little simpler in function.I don't have an 043 ,this is just from what I've read.---Jack

>Why do you want to buy a plow plane? If it's to do drawers, the 043 is fine, as is the 044. If you have more demanding tasks, let us know. The 044 may be necessary, or maybe a much larger plane.

>John,

Having used both a metal plow and wooden version, I'd recommend you consider finding a nice wooden plow plane if you only want to do grooves. If you want the versatility of the metal planes, to cut moldings, etc, go with them. But for me, to cut only grooves with the grain, I'd go with a woodie.

>Pam, your guess is right. My primary purpose would be to use it for drawer bottoms. But I wouldn't mind if it could handle more. I know the 044 is bigger, does it's cutter sizes overlap the sizes of the 043 or do I need both to cover all sizes?

>No, you don't need both, the 044 cutters cover the range.

>The Record #044 is a veru nice plough plane, well balanced and coming to hand nicely.

The #043 is simply a smaller, cheaper tool. If the work you have in mind is within it's capability, you might enjoy getting good work from such a physically small tool.

Finally, the #050 (or Stanley #50) is a combination plane; slightly heavier and less optimised for ploughing although (natch) more versatile.

As I noted to a similar question recently here...

>You will also find an 043 and 044 by Marples. They are almost identical. I have a minty Marples 044 and it is perfect for your stated needs.

If your thinking about a 50 also...

>Stanley's go for big bucks. I have a Record 050, same as the Stanley for the most part. Although some of the Stanley 50's have wooden handles that are a bit more comfy in the hand. The Record has a vastly superior blade adjuster than the Stanley. It does more than a 043 or 044. For what you describe what you going to be using it for, I'd go for the 044 or 050.

BTW get a nickel plated one, not the later cad. plated ones. Record like most other manufactures quality went down hill as they got older.

>Hi John

I have both the #043 and the #044. The latter is the one I prefer to use for drawer grooves.

The #044 is handled (where the #043 is not), has a fine depth adjustment (where the #043 does not), just feels more comfortable and stable in use, and is easier to set up. Having said that, the #043 is a nice plane and I was perfectly happy with it until I obtained the #044.

>I agree with this suggestion..

I'd go with the Record 050 over the 044 (I have both).

The 050 is very close in size, weight, and feel to the 044 but can do more than just ploughing.

I also have the 043. It's a fine little plane but if I had to choose two, I'd go with the 043 and the 050 and skip the 044. The 043 is different enough from the 044/050 to really be in a seperate class. Now it is indeed a plough plane, but it's small, simple, and only has 3 cutters.

I'll try to take some pics and post them tonight showing the differences between the 3.
