Follow-up to Lie-Nielsen post

Kelby

>I wanted to let everyone know a couple things as a follow-up to my post a couple days ago about rust pits on a Lie-Nielsen plane. I was a little frustrated (understandably, I think), but LN does not deserve any criticism for what happened. If anything, my experience speaks well for them. So here are some follow-up thoughts to make sure there's no ambiguity in the record.

First, it appears that the pits did, in fact, develop while in the dealer's storage. The plane was made in April, and shipped to me in September by the dealer. The pits probably developed during that time. So in all likelihood this has nothing to do with LN quality control.

Second (and this probably comes as no surprise) LN saw the thread here on Woodcentral and Tom LN himself sent me an e-mail Monday morning to get the problem taken care of, offering to send me a new plane right away and I could send the old one back when I get to it. This was particularly impressive given that I bought the plane from a dealer, so LN did not even have the transaction in its records. As I have thought about it over the past couple of days, the most remarkable thing about LN's customer service on this problem has been that it's not surprising --- this is the high level of customer service we have all come to expect from LN.

I was certainly frustrated at first that there was a problem, but I don't think LN has any fault for it, and LN has been extremely good about taking care of the problem. At most, LN may want to find a way to ensure that dealers take better care of the inventory or to guard against dealer storage problems. I have bought several tools from them in the past, and I will continue to do so in the future.

Yes. But I would like to point out that LN's and LV's customer service is EXCEPTIONAL, which is why we comment on it favourably.

This may be what we'd all like, but it isn't what we should expect (i.e. deem probably and normal).

In particular, a one-man-show simply cannot have the time/skills/resources to do what LV and LN do.

>your comments are shared by many. I have a few of his tools and I have nothing but respect for the organization. I know a few things about construction, woodworking and metals manufacturing having built careers in all. They run a nice operation with a few pieces of really sophisticated equipment and a surprising amount of handwork and finishing. Assembly and shipping is a little like Grandma's kitchen table but they get the job done and have built a nice reputation. Even more importantly, Tom has created real jobs in an area where they don't grow on trees.

One man show?

Bob Hackett

>Steve Knight does it on a regular basis,so does Leon Robbins.Sheperd, while it`s a 2 man show, still has exceptional customer service.Who else replaces parts after the buyer mangles them?

I`d be willing to bet Blue Spruce and Chester Toolworks go to great lengths to satisfy customers too.Brass City and afew of the folks here who refurbish tools(which may be more risky)offer great customer service.

All in all it`s been my experience that I get BETTER customer service from a one man show than from the bigger players. It`s the folks who have grown and still remember what it was like to be a one man show who retain that "please one customer at a time" attitude.

>Hear, hear. I will often go out of my way to deal with a one man shop due to the very high levels of satisfaction often recieved. The one flaw is that it *is* highly dependent on that one man. There are cases where it can be a diasaster. It can also be sticky if that one man/woman is out for a while, or otherwise busy (heh, they take vacations too). Patience is required and usually rewarded; this is difficult in these days of 24x7 service.

I had a similar experience with LN. Some months back I bought a new/unused LN 60 1/2 LA block plane on eBay. It worked out about 25% less than if I had bought it from LN. Well, it arrived well packed and looked stunning once out of the box. But the adjustment screw did not work (the connecting rod must have been bent slightly somewhere along the line). I emailed LN and explained the circumstances. Tom L-N, himself, returned the email with an offer to replace parts if a simple fix (bending the rod back into position) did not work. He later emailed me once again to check that all had gone well. Not bad service - especially when you recall that they did not sell the block plane to me. Incidentally, the fix worked perfectly, and the plane is terrific.

It is really a statement of utmost praise that we take for granted this type of attention to detail and personal service from companies like LN and LV.

Regards from Perth

What I appreciate especially

Wiley Horne--Glendora, CA

>about the Lie Nielsen firm is that Mr. Lie Nielsen himself is happy to talk to the customers. All my purchases have gone perfectly without any kind of problem--which I imagine is the typical situation.

But Thomas will write you back about your nutty suggestions of things he should make etc etc, and carry on a detailed conversation about it.

I really like it when you can talk to the boss.

Just An Observation

R.J.Whelan

>FWIW

In this day of automated response customer service, the chance to say something good about CS is, for me, rare.

I have had a few very good experiences over the last few years - interestingly they have all been with woodworking suppliers and tool builders. I don't know what this means, but I don't think it is a pure coincidence.

For fear of leaving out a deserving company or individual I will refrain from giving examples, but it's always a delight. I know of no other hobby or profession where the opportunity to interact with genuinely nice, dedicated and caring individuals is so common.
