Chisel with a brain
Bob Powers
>I have just started a project requiring numerous dovetails and I am using my new Lie-Nielsen chisels (for which I waited 5 months for delivery). I have used Marples Blue Handle chisels for about 15 years. I sharpen the Marples chisels with my Tormek, then take them to a hard felt wheel. The Lie-Nielsen chisels arrived almost ready for use, and I gave them a final treatment on my finest waterstone using a Nagura stone. I don't know what the grit of the finest waterstone is, since the information on the box is in Japanese. At any rate, it's the one you don't soak. For some reason, my dovetails look better and are more accurate than those I cut with the Marples. Can it be that after all these decades I have become smarter, or does Tom L-N embed a chip in the chisel that steers it better?
In reality, when I examine the two chisel types under a magnifying glass, there doesn't appear to be any difference in degree of sharpness. How come do you suppose this is?
