Record 405

Patrick

>I have found a record 405 in its box with cutters. It is lacking the instruction booklet and it feels kind of powdery which comes off on the hand. The person is asking for 300$ Canadian for the tool. Is this a good deal? This would the first time buying something like this and I would like to know if I am getting a deal or should I keep looking. This would be a user tool and not a collector.

Any help would be hugely appreciated. I am leaving tomorrow so need to know in the next 24 hours, if you can please respond to this instead of email as I will not be checking that.

Thank you in advance,

Pat

>If its feeling powdery it could be one of the earlier cadmium plated ones - I personally would look for a later nickel plated one for use or go for an Stanley.

Hope this helps

>Thanks for the response but it of course leads to more questions. Would the cadmium coating on the plane reduce its usability? Is there anything I could do to fix it up and cover/remove the powder? Of course that is assuming I buy the plane.

If I do not buy the plane are the nickel plated Records or Stanleys easy to find? I do not get a lot of chances to get out to garage sales and the like and this is the first plough plane I have come across.

Sounds high to me

I'd advise against that plane for that reason.

As to availability of Record 405's there are 2 right now on Ebay and that's a bit on the low side from normal. I usually see about 5-7 on ebay.

I paid about $210 or so for mine and it's in perfect condition and includes all parts. Here's what it look like:

By the way that's what a nickel plated one looks like.
