>Can someone give me a quick education on the differences in utility of hand scrapers vs. cabinet scraper (#80 type) vs. scraper planes (#112 type)? Seems to be some overlap in their use.
Thanks,

>I own the LV scraper plane and the LV cabinet scraper. The big differences are the blade is smaller in the plane. The blade angle can be adjusted on the scraper plane which increases the useable life before resharpening. As for different uses in work you can get the plane into area's where the handle of the cabinet scraper won't go.
What I use
Jim Reed @ Tallahassee
>I have a #112 by LN. It has a very thick (3/16" I think) blade that is merely sharpened. Smaller hand scrapers, like the #80, #12, etc use a thin (1/16" or less) blade that is sharpened and then burnished into a hook. The #112 is so easy to use that I sold my #80.

>The bigest benifet of the hand scraper is that you can adjust the angle of attack on the fly with just a twich of the wrest. I also rarely go for the 80 now that I have the LV 112. No matter what there will all ways be a need for the hand scraper.

>I use the 80s that I have (3) like you would a jack plane for work that is a little rougher. A lot of people use B-lt s-nd-hs for this type work. I have different thickness irons in them and the hook is different on each of them.
I use my 112 and 212 like you would smoother planes for a lot finer work
than I do with the 80
I use the hand held card scrapers for both of the above and in between.
These really are indispensable in my shop, and i have several in differing thicknesses burnished at differing angles.
