Typcially the English manufacters use London pattern sweeps which are about one step higher than the Europeans. that is a #7 English is about a #8 European.
But of course that's too easy also.
Over time the swage blocks and dies used to make the gouges wear and you are not gureneeteed an exact match between any two makers - close - but no cigar.

>probably not as long as you are consistent. in other words if your #7 straight is Germany and your #7 bent is English in certain cases it may be annoying - but I personally am not that compulsive and wouldn't care.
In general as you get more experienced in carving and more used to how each tool YOU have performs all the differences go away and your brain and hands will automatically compensate for differences.
