Socket Chisel Handles ?

Bob Hutchins in central TX

>Howdy Folks!

Recently the purchase virus caught me whilst browsing the bay, and 2 sash mortise chisels found there way into my mailbox. They still need some grinding and sharpening.

They arrived with handles but they are not seated in the sockets. They are not broken and fit tightly. Should I use glue to attach them? If so, what type? Will just tapping them in place be sufficient? I can only guess that they came loose from disuse and storage in an environment much drier than the one in which they were fitted.

TIA

>Probably they just loosened from disuse and repeated wet/dry cycles. Just use em. They'll reseat themselves. Be careful to hold them by the business end until they've been reseated, and also henceforth at the beginning of every heating season. You wouldn't want one to let go and drop through your foot.

>I`d store them by hanging in a rack fitted to the socket vs the handle too.

I try to stay in the habit of picking them up by the socket and handle both, turning them over and tapping the handle on the bench to seat them before use. It`s saved an edge from visiting the concrete floor on afew occasions.

No glue needed...

>I find it best to hold the chisel by the socket with the handle facing downward. Then drop it onto your workbench (don't let go of it) from a few inches up (6-8") to push the handle into the chisel socket. Repeat untill tight.

>Most of my chisels have handles that stay on or can be seated with a few taps. A few were problems, even though the handles were fitted tightly, maybe beause of the angle of the socket taper. In those cases, I moistened the inside of the socket and used a few drops of Gorilla glue. That works.
