replacing handle on everlasting chisel?

>Has any one ever waisted the time to do this? They built these things not to break but some how some one managed to do it. Do you turn the handle drill a 7/16 hole in the middle and then cut it in half and reglue it in place? These thing have a socket to them so it will net be able to fit the socket. They even had a steel ring that was pressed into the wood that was about 5/8" in diameter to prevent splitting but some how some one managed to do it? Do the new LN chisels have that part to make them last as long? would some one cut the handle off there LN so I can Know for sure?

That's how I've seen it done...

>But, I don't have a clue how it would hold up in the long run.

AFAIK, The LN's are plain 'ol socket chisels.

>Ernie,

The only viable method I have heard of to replace the handle on an Everlasting chisel is to shape the handle, drill it, split it, and glue it on. There have been quite a few discussions of this subject on the Old Tools list. Most of those contributing to the discussions there have written that they could find no good solution to the problem.

I have included a link to one of the discussions from last April. The contribution from Charles Aoun has a link to a cutaway picture of an Everlasting chisel which illustrates why this is a problem.

The LN chisels are an entirely different design; they are a conventional socket chisel like the Stanley 750.

Ted

>Damn! you mean this 25¢ chisel is only worth 25¢ on a good day? Dang I had visions of a quick and dirty handle making me $50! Bumbed as I am.

>How about making a two piece mold using the handle of another everlasting chisel as a pattern, inserting the busted chisel into the mold, and injecting epoxy into the mold? If you just forget about the wood, you should be able to make a "user" even more durable than the original.

Of course, it would be a lot easier to turn a new ironwood handle for a plain old ordinary LN socket chisel, if you managed to shatter it, or if the bench dawg happened to chew it up.

>To fix one now, cut the chisel about 1.5" below the button. Make a new handle, then drill 2 small holes, one in either end of the tang pieces.. make a taper pin that is about 2-3 thou of oversize in the center and 1-2 thou undersize at the end. Heat the two pieces of the chisel up to about 150-175dg... keep the pin in the fridge. Put the handle on the bottom, and put the pin into the button end, put the leather washer on the top piece and press the button end into the bottom. When it cools it will good as new w/a new handle. Worked so far for the 2 I've done. A machinist friend of mine came up w/the process. The shafts inside the handle were not that hard at all. I think the pins were around 3/16" or so made of hard brass.. but I couldn't swear to that nor do I plan to cut them apart to find out how the fit looks!
