Question about Hand Cut DT's...
Joe in a Cleveland suburb
>Hi.
Sorry to wonder in uninvited. I usually hang out in the power tool section.
Every once in a while I get the strange urge to try hand cutting dovetails. Sometimes I do ok, sometimes not. For reference I have a Frank Klauz video I watch before grabbing my Adria saw.
I recently decided to take some scrap Cherry and make a copy of the hanging Shaker cabinet on the cover of Woodworking magazine that Chris S. made. I thought, just for kicks, I'd do it a little different and put the case together with DT's. Instead of following what I learned from the video I decided to cut the tails first (always try different things to see which works for me) then use that to mark out the pins. I have a marking knife I made (the drill bit thing shown in PW mag).
So I marked out the pins and started cutting away. Pretty much all the pins are a tad too narrow. Here's the question and I think I know the answer. I cut on the line produced by the knife, I probably should have cut to the waste side of the line, right? After already cutting them out I seemed to remember hearing that someplace.
I suppose I could have used a pencil to mark them and then cut on the pencil line but I wouldn't have been able to get the pencil in there.
It isn't too bad for (I think) only my 3rd try at this. I think I can salvage what I've done, but it isn't perfect.
I thought I'd see what the experts have to say.
Thanks for any feedback,
Joe
PS - are there any expert hand cut DT Clevelanders here that would like to give an hour of there time to teach somebody like me how to cut pretty DT's? :)
