LV LA Jack Problem

>Hi All,
I know that there has been a lot of debate about the relative merits of bevel-down vs bevel-up planes, and I certainly don't want to stir up that hornet's nest again. I bought this plane when it first came out and for a number of reasons, didn't have much opportunity to really work with it until just recently. Unfortunately, I am having a bit of difficulty with the plane and I was wondering what people with more board-feet of experience with the LV LA jack do.
One of the things reviewers have commented on is that it is easy to reset the blade in exactly the same posistion after honing. My experience has been very different. The entire lever cap assembly moves slightly as I advance or retract the blade. It seems as though the brass screw that holds the lever cap to the plane body isn't advanced enough into the threaded hole. Once I noticed that this was happening I tried to tighten the screw, but obviously with the thickness of the blade and the cap, there is a physical limit to how much you can do that. While tightening it does lessen the "rocking" a bit, you have to unscrew it to remove the lever cap the next time you need to hone which cannot possibly be the intent of the designers.
I have reviewed the instructions that shipped with my plane and other than a caution not to overtighten, no special mention is made about blade advance. My question is what process do you use to advance or retract the blade. Have you noticed that you have to loosen the lever cap slightly each time you want to advance the blade?
I have been careful to follow the advice about overclamping, but any other insight would be greatly appreciated. I guess I could try a longer screw (the one that shipped with my plane has 7/8" of thread). I realize that I may have a lemon and that if I asked, Lee Valley would take it back. I don't want to do that unless this is a real problem.
