Tips for making a Chairmaker's devil?

Skip in Falls Church

>Does anyone have any tips about making a Chairmaker’s devil? I have enough Jatoba left from making spokeshaves that I could make a couple. What size or sizes would be best? I’ve seen one on the internet that is 7/8”. Is that a good size? Would another one slightly larger or smaller be advantageous? I have a choice of blade material – I have pieces of a left over back saw (0.025”) and a couple of old steel circular saw blades (0.06”). Would either be better than the other? I am planning to use brass as a wear strip. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Thanks,

Skip

>Hi Rob,

Rats! Thanks for the tip even though I sort of wanted to strike while the Iron is hot. I'm sure it would be better to see how someone more experienced puts one together. Well, I guess I'll just have to fill the time between now and then with other projects.

>Thanks Scott,

Those pictures are remarkably helpful. I might collect up everything I can then wait for the PWW article - or just go ahead and make one then wait to make the other. I can't make up my mind yet. :)

>Hi Scott,

I did that before I posted. And I did get some idea of how to make one - but probably not enough to make a really effective devil right off. I did collect a couple of pictures though.

>Hello-

I just put aside some hornbeam and lignum vitae to make one. I have a Ralston chair devil that must be around 7/8 inch radius. I plan on making one around a half inch or so, to work on the ends of Windsor spindles. I may wait for the PWW article just for the curiosity, although I have a good idea of how I want mine to function...

>Hi John,

I'll probably wait till PWW comes out as well - even though I *think* I've gotten enough information to make one both from replies here and some by email. I think I'll look at all of the examples I can then take the best features (as I see them) and make a couple of different sizes.

>Hi John,

I don't have any particular need for them now - although I suspect that at some point my wife might actually want something more than pretty boxes. :) So I'm going to accumulate the tools needed to make chairs.

>You are smart to make as many as you can, and really think about what you "need" to make a chair in the "traditional" way (whatever that is)...

>Hi Steve,

What can I say? I have to have *some* excuse for making tools. :) You have to admit that a set of matching shaves and devils would be really neat. If I get and make enough of the right ones I'm bound to produce a chair some time - right?

>Hi John,

Well, if I learn how to make them I can produce any size I need. (At least that's the theory.)

Look what happens when I leave town...

john jesseph

>All kinds of discussion on this while I was gone! Nuts!

You certainly have to qualify what you mean by "purist" when it comes to chairmaking. As I said, I am not aware of any strong historic evidence of specific techniques or tools for chairmaking...
