Level question and thinly veiled gloat.

Bob Hackett

>Had a 6" level follow me home today. It`s brass bound rosewood and the brass cap on one end says "Stratton Brothers Greenfield Mass" on one end.The cap on the other says "No. 10".Both vials are good. It`s a heavy little fellow, about the same cross section as my late model mahogany 2 footer.Anybody out there shed any lite on this before it goes in the barrister`s bookcase?

BTW-Got it in a package deal with 2 dozen new carbide circular saw blades,a double handfull of assorted new sawsall blades,a SW #4,a low angle Stanley block plane,2 older quality wrecking bars,a trim bar, cat`s paw, drywall tools, box of clamps,General 810 sharpening jig,a double handful of Perfect Handle screwdrivers and socket chisels,MINT Greenlee drawknife, slightly rusty L&IJ White drawknife, and cool old upolsterer`s tack hammer. All for the grand total of $40 of SWMBO`s money.

She wanted the cabide sawblades who`s labels totaled over $250 for her business.I told her why not throw the sawsall blades in too.Her reply,"$50 is ALL I`ll spend".Sure was surprised when I got it for $40.Hey,When the plywood+spray paint sign says"Everything must go"I take them at thier word.Probably could have run it up to $50 but we ran out of trunk space.

I figure a couple more deals like this and I`ll be ready to shave my head and look for some young hardbody to model 4 ft saws for me.;^)

Now about this cute little level...

>Grow you hair and keep your fife after all she bought you lunch and gave you the junk in her shopping box. Think you have a better deal even if the body isn't as hard as it used to be.

PS-Googled the level.Found someone offering a rosewood 9" for $375 and a rosewood 26" for $150.First time I`ve seen someone asking so much more for so much less(yes they are the same condition).

Mine cleaned(with Murphy`s oil soap)to excellent condition according to this fellow`s stock.

Thinly veiled gloat?

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>Bob: I'd hate to see you openly gloating. It'd be REALLY disgusting.

Nice haul, and it sounds like you had a good day.

>I'd like to wakeup and have the dream be real. You'd never be able to scrounge up that much stuff at the entire flea market here with probably 20,000 sq feet of indoor space. Now if you need a few pipe wrenches there's thousands of them.

Pipe wrenches

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>My brother proudly brought me a 14" pipe wrench that he picked up from the street. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I already had four or five in this size.

Maybe they reproduce by division, like amoebas.

>Try finding one when you need one.

Broke the water line in my mother`s house just beyond the pressure tank the other day.Of course the shut off valve needed a pipe wrench as it was too corroded to grab with an adjustable.Had to call both my sons to find out where one of them left the last of my 6 pipe wrenches before I could fix it.

Didn`t help that mom says my father`s curse of wishing me to have sons just like me looks like it`s coming true.Just a shame dad isn`t here to see it,I`ll bet he`d enjoy it even more than mom seems to.

>With levels a good rule of thumb is that the smaller they are the more they are worth. A quick look on ebays completed auctions showing a 8 in. Stratton in very nice condition but with dry vials, [dry not busted] geting bid up to $165 while nice 26 in. ones are lucky to make $30. Maybe the exception that proves the rule but Years ago I sold a very nice 13 in. one that went for over $300 on ebay because apparently 13 in. was a very rare size according to the emails I got. I got it in with a bunch of stuff at auction for $5

While some levels are desirable, and pricy, when people ask me which ones to buy I tell them they need to remember 3 things. ...1] buy only small ones 2]don't pay more then $10] and most important, 3] don't buy levels .....Todd
