Carving a Queen Ann Fan or Shell

Tom Colligan, Peoria

>I have several reference books on how to carve a fan or {Newport} shell but none cite the chisels/gouges that are needed.

Can someone advise me of the tools that I should expect to purchase to do this carving. TIA, Tom.

Ps. I know this has come up before but I've been unsuccessful in searching for it.

Mack Headley wrote an article for FWW # 61. In it he suggests gouge sizes for the shell he is carving.

Your needs will depend on the style and size you want to create. A larger shell means larger gouges and so on. If the shell is concave you'll have to add bent and back-bent gouges.

>Also, he did a FWW video on shell carving. Lonnie Bird covers it in his book, as does Queen Ann Furniture by ??? (can't recall the fella's name but he carves a fan) also in Jeff Green's book. Not sure if any of those show the tools. I took a chair class with Lonnie Bird and have the tool list at home. Take the first s out of my email address and ping me if you want me to dig it out. I also have the shell article that Mack did. It may have been in one of the FWW article collection books as well.
