I started the day with one Shapton 5000....

>Dropped my Shapton Pro 5000 stone today while wiping it down. It took 10 seconds to hit the floor. I didn't move an inch while it was in mid air.

WHen it landed I had two Shapton stones. Broke it pretty much down the middle and it was a clean break. Talked to Stanley at Shapton shortly afterwards and he recommended Epoxy.

Both pieces are large enough to free hand sharpen on and I guess I could now use the two stone method to keep my Shapton 5000 and 8000's flat.

>Bummer days Dan!

But I would go ahead and let the stones thoroughly air dry for a couple days and epoxy them. Then flatten it and go ahead and use it. It'll be good as new most likley.

>Hi Steve,

I have epoxied it and checked it with a straight edge on both sides and each corner. Looks pretty square and flat. It'll need a little bit of flattening after this but looks good. I will let the glue cure until morning.

By the way, the stone was practically dry when it broke as I was just giving it a quick flatten on my new piece of plate glass given to me by a friend.

>Hi Dan,

I feel for you, I'm pretty good at doing stupid things too.

But don't two 5000s make a 10 000? Just drop it a few more times and it'll be worth a fortune.

Sorry to hear about the misshap. Sounds like

>you have it under control.

Sort of related: I (we?) need to find more of the rubber floor mats that snap together like a jig saw puzzle. I understand they were made in Indonesia and the only plant in the world that made them was distroyed in the great tsunami last year? Is this fact or fiction? Sources anyone?

>don't know about jigsaw puzzle, but Costco carries them from time to time that snap together on all sides, and another woodworker got the big kids play mats.

>I get mine at Sam's Club. $17.00 for eight tiles and edging. They had literally pallets of the stuff the last time I was in my local Sam's.

I've got about ten sets of it on my shop floor, and now the wife says she'd like some for her quilting studio...

*UPDATE*

Dan Clermont in Burnaby

>I Talked to Harrelson Stanley and he told me to epoxy them back together so I did just that. I found some 2 part epoxy which works with Ceramic and went to it. Spent about 30 seconds reflattening the stone and am back to work.

I wonder if you could do the same thing with a natural, synthetic or oil stone.

The stone works as well as it did before.

>Thanks Jim, I'll check out the local Sam's. Does your wife go to the International Quilt Festival? Been with my bride several times over the years. It is absolutely incredible. If you get a chance to come, you can be our guests.

Victor - now that the huricane seems to be heading elsewhere we are still hunkering down waiting for the Rita rain storms

>If you were using diamond grit on an acrylic substrate, like some of us out here on the lunatic fringe, you wouldn't have had a problem.

In my book, versatility in tools is an important asset. When I'm not sharpening something with them, I suppose I could get away with using my "stones" to deter cats :^)

>Hi William,

A little hijack here, since Dan has thankfully solved his problem: is contamination a problem between the grits of paste? I vaguely remember Bill saying that he was experiencing some problems. Do you use water-based paste?

Thanks for any info, I'd like to try it out (it would certainly be an asset in my unheated shop) but hesitate taking the plunge because I have yet to meet a person who has stuck with this system in the long haul. Of course I'm assuming you use paste for rougher work (primary bevels) and not just for a final honing after stones...
