Mein Gott, those boxes are valuable! *LINK*

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>I've been idly watching side rabbet planes, just to get an idea of how much money I need to save up. This one kinda stunned me. Apparently, those boxes are valuable - the plane went for over three times the price of another without a box and with only slightly more rust, sold two days before.

Bill, a user not a collector - no way I'd pay that kind of money

"HOW much did you pay for that, dear?"

Don't they make these anymore?

>I bought a new one at Woodcraft (with its box, which I probably still have) not that many years ago - maybe three or four? I don't remember paying a whole lot for it, either. It seems like the kind of simple design that they couldn't have screwed up as time went on - kind of like the 271.

I don't use it a lot, but for what it does, it's very useful. I mostly use it to widen grooves when I don't have the right sized plow iron. It does that kind of thing very well and very quickly.

I just looked at the usual suspects (Woodcraft, HH, LV) and they don't have it in their online catalogs. When did this model bite the dust? Or did it?

>With it's original box and mint looking. Very collectable, Bill. I have and english one and with a little work it works just fine.

That's sad.

>They were very good for what they were good for, and very reasonably priced to boot. I'm glad I got one before they went away.

Sold Cheap

>I'm actually a little surprised it didn't go for more. This is an early sweet heart era plane, probably from the first couple years they were made in the mid 1920s. This plane books for $75- $150. This example appears to be in MINT never used condition with 100% of it's bright finish. Box as well is in about as good a condition as can be hoped for...OK everybody raise thier hand that has one or has even seen a no. 79 of this vintage in this condition...Eh? I know I haven't. I think if presented better the plane could have made $300. Quite a different animal then one with no box, perhaps of later make and with rust and not mint.

The people selling this tool I believe go to a local auction I go to, driving down all the way from N.Y. every week. They load up a big truck with LOTS of stuff.Have noticed them riding my coat tails a few times bidding on tools that I do as I don't think they know to much about such things. Normaly I put the junk up first and then keep the good stuff for afterward figuring they will be satisfied on beating me out on stuff I don't even want. Seems to work OK ...Todd
