>Seeing as how we're supposed to be "downsizing" after moving into out RV, I thought my auction days were over for a while. But the other weekend, my wife and I decided to go to the auction because...well...we have no life We told ourselves we wouldn't buy anything...it was just a night out. Yeah right
Came home with an antique carpenter's tool box that needed a little work, but for $7.50 what the heck. Then I outdueled another bidder for an older Arkansas transulecent stone with original chestnut box and label for $13.50. I also got an older 6" machinist vise, a heavy thing, for 10 bucks and a half a dozen Jorgenson heavy duty 6" C clamps for 12 bucks. I don't reckon I did too awful bad.
The tool box is dovetailed but was missing the till and had a split on the back that I didn't notice when I threw my hand up and won the bid. It was one of those impulse buys where I missed seeing it in the preview, but wasn't going to let the first bidder have it for the opening bid of 5 bucks Also on the lid where the hinges were morticed in, chunks of wood were missing where the screws broke out. I guess I could glue a couple of "dutchmen" in to repair the lid. I guess that will work? I'm going to put some antique looking T strap hinges surface mounted with carriage bolts instead of screws anyway. It also had a morticed box lock at one time. I happen to have a NOS mortice lock that might fit it. Otherwise I will probably find an old hasp for it. ( I hope the mortice lock fits. It will look better.)
The stone had a chunk broke out of the bottom corner where it was dropped, but that won't affect it's use. It's supposed to be equal to 800 to 1,000 grit. It sure do put a high polish on a plane iron.
Well, that was my weekend. How was everyone else's?
Mike G wondering where he's going to put another tool box.
