Probably missing the full thrill?

>I use vintage planes sure I have a couple new ones LV, Steve Knight. I don't know might be somthing else new down in the shop. I have never laped the sole of a plane Sure I have removed the blade and planned some sand paper to remove some rust and gunk. But I never tried to make one dead flat. every one I ever cleaned that way was allways pretty dam good right off the jointer bed. (My brother is suposed to come pick that peice of steel up and get it out of the way real soon) All I ever do it sharpen the blade and set it. some times I will need to adjust the frog or clean the threads n the adjuster. I have never taken a squair or straight edge to a side or sole. I think I can pull what ever the shaving is needed from any of my planes as most ow the people here. sure I'm betting there are a couple super planers here that will consistantly do better but that probably has more to do with experance and technique. I guess what I am saying is I don't understand why people would think that they have to go through some complex ritual befor ever using a plane let alone a new one. Or maybe it's needed because it is a new one? I guess I might need to go get a squair and try it I might get my ya yas off and not know what I am missing. I wonder what other small things in life I am missing out on?
