Weird hinges

Jeremy Osner

>Hi all, I've been away from the list for a little while -- I picked up a whole bunch of old hinges at the church rummage sale this morning, most of them are just regular hinges with two pieces and a pin (and they match the hinges in our house, nice to have on hand) -- but one pair is different. They are only two pieces, so the pin is built into the upper half and you would take the door off just by lifting it up; I have seen hinges like this before -- but these ones mate along a spiral track, so as you open the door it lifts up about half and inch, and as you close the door it sinks back down. Is this just an automatic closing mechanism? I am thinking the door would pull itself closed. Anyone see these before?

>Oh yeah, that would make sense. Seems like you would need to shave off a bit of clearance on the top of the door though to keep it from bumping into the frame as it opened. at least at the inside corner of the top.

"Rising hinges"

I thought these were fairly standard. If well lubrucated, they will swing a door closed, although not hard enough to operate a latch.

AFAIK their main purpose is to clear carpets, so I wouldn't expect to see them in (e.g.) Italy, where fitted carpets are not common.

I have several doors in my house so fitted.

Here's a common bulk supplier in the UK

>Hi Ernie, they are big enough for an entry door.
