Removing rust from old hand plane *LINK*

>Has anybody got some good techniques (read, that work) for removing rust from the working surfaces of a hand plane? My father gave me my late grandfathers hand tools, and the hand plane is pretty well speckled with rust. The surfaces don't appear to be pitted. The blade (gotta be a replacement) I think I can work with, or at the worst, replace.
Also, if anybody has information on what make/type this is, I'd appreciate it. The main face (don't know what you call the bottom where the slot for the blade pokes through is called) is roughly a foot long. As best I can tell, there are no markings on any parts of the plane except for a "Made in USA" in raised letters on the main body underneath the adjustment mechanism.
Thanks much,
Phileas
P.S. "New" old tool gloat: I was also given my Grandfather's bit brace with three auger bits. I'm guessing both the plane and bit brace were manufactured in the 1920s.
