help me ID some saws?
Steve Kubien
>Hi there,
I recently acquired a few old saws and I am hoping the essembled masses can help me ID them.
First is a 20" skew back with only 2 nuts holding the badly beaten handle. The etch is perfectly clear, not very ornate and reads "Celebrated" rounded across the top, "Frank York" through the middle, "Warranted" rounded along the bottom. Who was Frank York in the saw making world? Should I care about re-making the handle? The size will be perfect for my kids.
Second is a 26" saw with a nib. 3 nuts hold the handle along with a steel plate (all 3 nuts go through the plate). The etch is not very clear (yet) but I can make out a horse shoe shape and part of a signature through it reading "Gold". Any idea of the maker or a site I can go to to find out more?
Last one (for tonight) is a Shurly Dietrich. I know they were Canadian but the blade on this one extends through the handle, top and bottom right through the back edge of the handle. There appears to be a nib (possibly a rod?) extending from the bottom horn through to the top. No idea if this is odd/rare. What say you?
As usual, I am just curious. I doubt I've stumbled on to anything outstanding and don't care, much. I got the backsaw I wanted (a nothing special Ward in very good shape) and these others were part of the lot. There are a couple more whose medallions are being cleaned as we speak (soaking in WD-40) and whose blades haven't been touched yet. One medallion appears to have some sort of 4 legged animal but I'm not sure yet.
Thanks for the help,
