Hey Rob Lee!

>I just received my copy of the new 2005/2006 Lee Valley catalog. The carved brace on the cover by André Millette from Québec is absolutely gorgeous! Is there somewhere we can see more of Mr. Millett's work? A website perhaps?

I'm a pretty big fan of André's stuff.

Great website!

>Thanks for the link Frank. There is a pretty high drool-factor on some of the pages. I also got some background on a couple of S.Dalpe...Roxton Pond planes I recently acquired.

Thank you very much!

>Hi Mike -

I see you've already been pointed in the correct direction...(long weekend up here, so I wasn't around....)

Mr Milette does fabulous work. What doesn't show in the photo, are the tools has has to make to execute some of the details on his work. The carving tools shown are also ones he's made - though not for this project.

Most of his work goes to very serious collectors....

Cheers -

Rob

Heh. And there was me thinking that his carved brace was just the thing for windsor chair making... :-)

>I had the privelage of meeting Andre Millette, as well as Frank D, at a woodworking show in St. Hyacinthe , Quebec. You have GOT to see some of the planes Monsieur Millette makes. Beeeeee-uuu-tiii-fulll.

One of his planes was incredibly small, and was made of ivory. I think the total length was about an inch or so, and under 1/2" wide. This was a functioning tool.

His smoothers were a sight to behold.

At that show, Frank D (who provided the above link) was in a hand-plane contest. He used his Lie-Nielsen # 5 1/2, to edge out his competitor (Japanese Woodie). They had to produce an unbroken , full-length(about 2 feet), full-width shaving, in order to qualify for measurement. Frank managed to get a shaving of .00047" (47/10,000).;-)) Needless to say, I was impressed.

Frank very kindly and generously offered to let me try his smoother after the contest, and I've been hooked ever since. That was my very first experience with such a high-quality tool. Frank gave me a whole new perspective on the possibilities of using fine hand-tools, for which I'm entirely grateful. I probably learned more in 1 hour with Frank, than I had in the last 25 years on my own.

Re: L-N 5 1/2, oops!! Typo

Bob Dodge

>Hi David,

I just noticed as I read your post, that I made a typo on that plane model. It shoulda read L-N 4 1/2, rather than the 5 1/2. Sorry about that. I probably had 5 1/2 on my mind because I'm in the process of ordering one. Now that I think of it, I'll order your videos as well.

All the best, Bob

>Hey Bob,

Thanks for the kind words. I wasn't going to tell Mr. Charlesworth about the 5 1/2, didn't want to disappoint him... Oh well, the cat's out of the bag now, 4 1/2s RULE! ;)
