>One other place that's very good for hand tool discussions is the OldTools List. While it's not strictly a "board" - it's actually an email list, but you can access it via a web interface rather than flooding your email - it is probably the oldest continuously running handtool resource on the web. You'll recognize a number of names from here posting there, and the archives (particularly the really old stuff) are an incredible resource.

This link takes you to the archive, which allows you to lurk and read messages but not post. I find it's a more convenient way to read the messages than the official web interface, but YMMV.

None

>This is my one and only. I am a former Badger Ponder and washed upon this Island when it went dry. I did check into Sawmill Creek, but forgot my password and said to heck with it. Over a year ago I checked into Woodnet, they set me back some type of "Code" to be able to log on which I never did. Still got it in my Inbox, but never get around to fooling with it.

I like it here. I've got good friends here and I feel to be a part of a community. I'm sure that other forums have the same "community feeling", but I don't know for sure. Plus, I like this format the best of any others I've seen. I do miss, and would like to hear from some of the others from my Badger Pond days tho.

I do enjoy looking at the various U.K. forums when one is linked, but otherwise don't visit them. I should tho as I do enjoy seeing how other's do/don't do things.

time is another big factor in keeping me right here. I spend enough time on the 'puter as it is without having muliple forums to visit. This one alone offers a bit of everything what with the P@wer side, the Turning side, the Carving side, and this one. What more could be asked for?

>Todd Cronkite, you are a character I don't think I would forget, but don't remember you from the pond days. I wonder what my Badger Pond hat and mug will be worth a hundred years from now. But I'm with you on this one; one woodworking message board is about all I can handle, and this is the best one on the web. By that I mean the administration has a good presence without being obnoxious, and it is widely read, and offers everything I think I could possibly need in a forum, plus some. I think Badger Pond sort of gave me a good idea of wht a forum should be like, thanks to Wayne Miller, and a lot of the guys from there are here now and it is a very similar forum to the good old pond days. Of course I have a steelhead site I visit regularly, but it is a much different forum than this one.

When you subscribe to a mailing list (I'm on about a dozen computer related ones for work purposes, as well as the Porch) you MUST (if you want to stay sane) use your email reader tool's filtering tools.

This allows each the emails from each separate list to put into a separate folder for your reading pleasure.

>I've been on the oldtool email list for about 6 years I guess. Can be kind of a pain due to the number of emails you get but I enjoy it though I don't participate all that much any more.Lots of very knowledgable members. You can post a "For Sale" once a month though I don't think I ever have.

...Have been on the Woodnet handtool forum for the past year. A pretty good forum with lots of posts.Mostly "newbie" guys with a few regulars and you get a lot of passing though type folks as well I think. The regulars , esp. when I first got on, didn't like it when my opinon differed from thiers and things could get pretty heated and at times downright nasty.I still get the feeling I am only just tolerated...I love it! They also allow For Sale items and I have sold a good many user type tools on it with a very positive response ,[ie made some $]........Todd

I remember, back in the day...

mike recchione

>When I'd go on vacation for a week and find my inbox storage limit exceeded by Porch emails when I got back. Of course, two things have happened. The Porch isn't as active as it was back when it was essentially the only game in town for traditional woodworking, and inbox storage limits have increased by several orders of magnitude.

Still, I have my list settings on "nomail" and read OldTools on Chris Swingley's archive site because I just find it less cumbersome to use than the Lyris interface. Also, I can access both the html interfaces for OldTools from work, but our CIO blocks access to web mail outside the firewall.

Yeah Moses, I was there

Todd O. Cronkhite Maine Native in FL. Exile :~(

>I was in Badger Pond. Fell in about late '98/Early '98. Yes, I was in Japan at the time with no time to do WW, but I hung out anyway. Really didn't have much to offer knowledge ways tho. Got to admit that I was fairly new to WW and oldtools at the time, and really learned alot about them from you guys. To fill in the desire for WW and tools I bought a bunch of LN's. I knew nothing of e-bay at that time either. I was making the money and could afford them, but now I can't.

Retired from the Navy Dec.'02, and am just now getting to the point that my shop (two car garage)is set up to the point of being a functional shop.

I'm no Sam Maloof, but WW keeps me occupied and broke, and I enjoy seeing my "Progress" however slow it is.

I remembered you. Last time I knew you had decided not to have a computer at home so that you could spend more time with your twin daughters IIRC.

And/or, for oldtools, you can set it to 'digest' mode, and you only get one message per day around midnight Eastern time, with all that day's posts therein ...

Re: offline

Moses Yoder in White Pigeon, MI

>I was offline for a while for several reasons, the main one being that having my own business took up a lot of my time, and I found it difficult to control the amount of time spent online. Now I work a steady 45 hour work week and do a few things on the side. I am definitely a type B personality, but there are a lot of things I would like to get done. I do recall the guy from Japan buying LN planes with no shop to use them in ;) I don't have twin daughters; I think that was Rod Cole. My daughters are now 9 and 13. The older one has no interest in learning to ride a bike, but the younger one wanted to start riding a bike this year, and today was the first day without training wheels; a real father/daughter moment that we will both look back on as fond memories. They will grow old and be gone soon, and I'll regret not spending more time with them. We live a very simple life and have a great family.

Thanks for the feedback....

A.J. Byrd

>...and tips they are greatly appreciated. I lurk on wood central quiet a bit and I have learned a huge amount front the posts, articles and archives. I find this to be the best woodworking board on the net (pun intended) but its nice to have more than one source of information to draw from and its good to see that there are other boards up and doing well. By the way I do feel a bit guilty about lurking and posting ect... without having sent in any cash to support W.C. but I plan to remedy that come payday.

Thanks Again

>Ummm - maybe so - so far, I've only lurked there, haven't tried to post. It also means that the good FS tools are all long gone by the time the message gets to me.

But, the 'get every message' setting is a swamp of messages, and if I either send them all to a separate mail folder or rely on the web site, I just never remember to check them ...

>Maybe slightly more effort, but I find that it is worth it not to get deluged with all the individual emails. When replying on Old Tools, I just start a new email to oldtools and cut and paste the relevant bits in. Only takes a few more seconds and helps me to be more disciplined about including only the required bits from other postings.
