>Stopped at an antiques shop where all of the same type tool were the same price regardless of age, type, condition, etc. All spokeshaves were $10.00. I grabbed one that has "Bailey's Patent Aug. 31, 1858" cast into the back of the handles and "Bailey Boston" on the iron. I know where to find plane info., anyone know where to find info. on shaves?

>Tom,

I'm not sure if this information is as available on the internet as information about planes. The best source of info that I have found about spokeshaves is Tom Lamond's book called "Manufactured and Patented Spokeshaves". It is very comprehensive about all things spokeshave. There is a chapter about Leonard Bailey's contributions to the advancment of spokeshaves that is about 12 pages long.

In the list of patent's issued to L. Bailey related to woodworking tools, the date you mentioned shows a patent number of 21,311 with the subject of the patent being Spokeshaves #1 and #2, securing irons.

Lamond also shows a number of different markings on blades of shaves manufactured by different firms Bailey was connected with. The closest marking to the one you described shows being made from 1866 to 1869, approximately.
