PNTC Tool Meet

>This weekend was the Pacific Northwest Tool Collectors monthly meeting in Aurora Oregon. A little bit south of Portland. Beings it is late summer it wasn't hugely attended but not a bad crowd. Oregon meetings are often a bit smaller than those that take place in Seattle. Had a pretty good time though. Always some real interesting tools to see and buy if one sees fit to do so. For the first time I went with the idea of selling tools rather than buying so I was bit apprehensive. These guys know their tools and they really work hard for a deal that is suitable to them and not necessarily to you. All in all though I managed to stave off any real bad offers and took a few that weren't so bad. Got rid of some things I no longer needed or wanted which is the best part of it all.

Its funny though. The things you think will just fly off your table sit there with hardly a glance and those that you put there for filler sell like hotcakes. So I went home with a lot of what I thought I'd sell and sold a bit of what I didn't think anyone would be interested in.

I did get to meet Dave Jeske who often contributes to this forum and who makes some really nice woodworking tools. Dave decided to come down and show off some of his work and introduce himself to the club and its members. If you haven't seen Dave's tool offerings you should check out his website at bluesprucetoolworks.com. Dave's marking tools and dovetail chisels are very nice both functionally and aesthetically. I had a good time talking with Dave about his tools and just anything else we could think of.

As far as purchases I only bought one backsaw for myself. It was a beauty though. Its a Jackson which was made by Disston, 12 inches long 13 PPI crosscut. It was in remarkable condition considering its age. It was a split nut so prior to 1870. The handle was still in great condition and the blade was very straight and had most of the blade left. I'm guessing it had barely been used at all. I sharpened it up last night and its ready to go. Also bought a nice Stanley block plane for a friend.

That was pretty much my weekend. Far too short.

>Dave, as usual, I let the meeting date slip my mind. Glad to hear your selling experience wasn't bad. I've gone to meetings for five or six years and often thought of trying to sell some of my redundant stuff. It's very hard to go to those meetings and control my impulses to buy anything that catches my eye. Anyway nice to see your note.

I ran across a site with sets of pictures from some of the meetings. Perhaps you are in the August set. Bob

>I have actually been a member of PNTC for about a year but something ALWAYS gets in the way of me attending the meetings. I was finally able to attend one. It was very fun for me because here in Oregon I find it dificult to run across many old tools in the wild. It was a chance to check out many designs and get some inspirations for future development work. If I had pockets full of cash there were plenty of tools to take home. I ended up with a few things following me home. A Miller Falls circular shave, Stanley saw set and a couple of small push drills. It is always interesting to meet other WC folks and put faces with names. Had a great time talking with Dave C. and had to try hard not to buy his tools! I had a pretty good response to the tools I showed considering this is more of an "old tool" crowd. I am going to try and make it up for a Seattle meeting next time.
