Re: Shop Security Survey

>Rob .... my shop is in a commercial area (not at home) so I put a little extra effort and expense into protecting my income producing tools and equipment.
I have a large bell in a tamper-proof box mounted high on the wall (just below roof level - about 18' above grade. The bell is meant to scare away the non-professional burglar and alert the neighbors.
My alarm panel is made by Ademco and includes a digital communicator that's hooked to a central station monitoring service through a phone line (the phone line is swept several times per day so if it's cut the monitoring service knows it and either calls me or dispatches the PD). The phone cable comes in underground and is protected by armored jacket. A more secure communications method is via RF, but this isn't offered in the rural community in which I reside. If you have a phone in your shop and use the same line for alarm monitoring you need a "line siezer", so the burglar can't stop the communication by lifting the phone off of the hook.
My shop is 25' x 35' and is easily covered by a single infrared motion sensor.
I went the extra step and installed two fire sensors (rate of rise detectors) and have them on a second zone in my alarm panel so the central station knows if they get a Zone-2 signal it's a fire and not a break in.
Good luck ... rj
