handsaw sharpening

>Any recommendations on handsaw sharpeners?

Tom Law no longer does this work (I called him).

I can sharpen saws, but the old Diston dovetail saw that I bought needs more than a few passes with a file. The thing needs to be jointed quite a bit.

thanks

>Just joint it and file it some more strokes.

Some may disagree on this, but I would advocate NOT filing all the teeth off, especially on a fine-tooth saw. Joint it down a ways, making sure you don't remove all the gullets. If you don't have it flat yet, file the gullets down some to retain them and then do some more jointing.

You say this is a dovetail saw, so you will be filing it with a rip profile. Once you get the rake angle right, you just keep filing...

It is really not much more difficult to joint and file than to just file. We all have confidence in you. Go for it!

Best Regards,

Ted

>Hi Les,

I agree with Ted. The method he describes should keep you on track. If you've been sharpening for a while it should be pretty easy.

Get a hold of Tom's saw sharpening video-it shows you how Tom sharpens saws. Well worth the money.

Hope this helps

Check your local yellow pages...

>Depending where you live you might find a good sharpener right in your area. I have a local saw shop sharpen mine.

Seems he does about every carpenter’s and cabinetmaker's saws around here. He also does most of the lumber mills around here too.

There's a guy in NY names Chris "somebody" (can't remember his last name) that I've heard does a good job. I'll poke around and see if I can find him.

>Ton knows of a couple folks that at one time he would recommend. Last I spoke with him he mentioned someone in the Chicago area but I didn't get any names. Like others are saying give it a try. Make sure you joint it before filing so the teeth stay in line with one another. And just take off a little at a time so you don't get big teeth and small teeth. You can always joint it and try it again.
