More on Shoulder Planes

Bill Grumbine (Kutztown PA)

>Greetings all

Bright and early Monday morning I took daughter #2 off to college. Now that might now sound like it has a lot to do with shoulder planes, but it just so happens that the college she is attending is not too far from the home of our esteemed moderator Ted Owen. Ted and I have gotten together a few times in the past and so we used the opportunity to get together after all the moving in chores had been accomplished.

I had the great privilege to try out a few of Ted's planes, and just the action of planing a few boards - well, one board which Ted brought along, gave me quite an education on some of the differences in the planes. The LV medium shoulder plane is indeed a fine tool, but it is just a little on the small side for my hand. I also got to try a large Record plane, which Ted said was pretty close to the equivalent of the large LN and LV shoulder planes. This fit my hand perfectly, and was very easy to use one handed. I guess it should be noted here that my hands are just a little on the large side.

Anyway, we had a great time together over two days, and we got to meet his daughter who is about to resume her college studies after summer vacation. The two yound ladies hit it off very well together, although they are going to different schools and may not see each other for a while. Ted, thanks again for a wonderful time, and shame on you for placing such temptation in my hands!

Boy, you must have big hands...

>If you can one hand a Record 073. That's way too big and heavy a plane for me to hold one handed.

So what's it going to be, LV or LN?

Really! Sheesh, Bill, your hands look more like garbage can lids with fingers. : )

It was great to see you and Lisa again, as always. And I know Sarah is going to love college life. She is so well-grounded. Please assure her that if she needs anything, she should call us anytime.

Sorry I didn't have enough planes to help with the LN vs. LV decision, but at least we got the size figured out. And, as we discussed, for cleaning dadoes you might most economically look for some woodies of various sizes. I should have added that they probably won't match modern plywood thicknesses, though.

Best, Ted

>Ted, big hands, but not light fingers! You got all four back, although it was a mighty struggle to not drive off into the sunrise, as it were. ;-) Of course, you know where I live.
