Questions?

Tony Sade (Charleston, WV)

>Dont' mean to hijack the thread, but I'm working on a bench and looking for stock-holding options. Do these fit in a 3/4" hole? Does anything special need to be done to the bench, or does the bench need to be of specific thickness to accomodate this holdfast? What's the length of the shaft? Is the collar a necessary accessory? Thanks, Tony

>I'll try to answer what I can. I'm at work so I can't check until later.

Do these fit in a 3/4" hole?

Not sure...off the top of my head, I'd say no. They are designed to work with the collar.

Does anything special need to be done to the bench, ...

Yes you have to install the collar that comes with it in your bench top.

...or does the bench need to be of specific thickness to accomodate this holdfast?

Not sure there is a limit. My benchtop is almost 3" thick. I had some trouble since the screws included with the collar are not quite long enough. I could have special ordered longer ones but I just made counter-bores on the bottom so I could use the included bolts.

What's the length of the shaft?

Are you referring to vertical length? or the reach? I don't know what the vertical length is but mine can reach out up to 10"-12" from the shaft. I can extend it more if I use a clamping board and a spacer.

Is the collar a necessary accessory?

See above. I think it is but others may disagree.

hope this helps!

>I picked up a couple of the big ones on eBay a few months ago and installed them on a small bench I built recently. I like them a great deal - the pressure they're capable of could easily crush bricks. On the other hand, because they're not produced anymore, getting extra mounting collars is very difficult. They don't work in any arbitrary hole, and in fact, installing the collar is a pain in the neck - they require three different diameters for different parts of the hole, and the cost of the hole saws I had to buy for these large holes was as much as one of the holdfasts (yeah - I know I'll have them for another project, but I've never needed those sizes before, and don't see needing them again). The bench I installed them on is 3" thick, and the supplied bolts were too short - I got longer ones at Home Depot. I think the minimum thickness is something like 1.5". They're probably happy with anything in between.

I installed mine so that they could hold something near the edge of my bench, as per the instructions. This limits being able to use them to hold battens to use as stops for face planing wider boards in the way that Chris and Dean have been demonstrating. If I could get additional collars, I would install another set towards the back of the bench. But I haven't had any luck doing that so far, so I'm actually considering drilling holes for traditional holdfasts further back.

Overall, I'm happy with the Record holdfasts, and I'm glad I have them. I haven't used the bench I put them on for face planing wide boards yet, and they've been perfect for the kind of things I have used them for.

Well, that's what you get for straying from the one true path.

When I installed my collars, I ran a 1/8 long series (twist) bit through the bench with a Millers Falls breast drill. I then used a washer cutter in a 14" sweep brace to cut and delineate the outer collar recess, which (from memory) is around 3" OD, and 1/4" deep. I used chisels followed by a #71 router to level this recess.

I made the next hole (1 1/4" IIRC) with a blacksmith made centre bit, in a 12" sweep brace.

Finally I made the (1" IIRC) through hole with a 1" Jennings auger in a 10" sweep brace.

More tools!

Note to others; when using twists bit you may make a series of holes in any sequence; a small twist bit will self-centre in a large hole, and a large twist bit will enlarge a small hole.

But when using piloted bits you must drill the large holes first, so that each successively narrow bit has some material to hold the pilot.

Well, now

mike recchione

>Given that I don't have a 14" sweep brace or a washer cutter capable of cutting a 3" hole, I still would have had to spend as much as I did on the 3" hole saw, and maybe wait a while to find the stuff. (Actually, I think I just lied - I just remembered that I have this craftsman-made adjustable gasket cutter that would have served for the 3" hole. Darn! I had picked the thing up at a flea market, figuring it would come in handy some day, and then when the day came along, I forgot I even had it! I did get some use out of it when I was making 8" diameter MDF wheels for my carving tool sharpening set-up, though, so I don't feel too bad.)

Since we're on the topic, do you have a source for extra collars? I ask this from time to time, in the hope that one turns up.

IME they're rarer than holdfasts, at least on the s/h market.

Whilst doing a search I found this:

a current production, and rather fine, washer cutter

Looking at the rest of the site reveals some lovely stuff.

Unless you send me 10 bucks by return of post, I'll tell your SWMBO that you have more tools than you can remember to use :-)
