cleaning and waxing some tools...
Victor Parisian
>Hi all. Awhile back, there was discussion about parafin wax for plane bottoms and other tools. I have to relate the following:
Wife and I moved about 9 months ago, and are still setting up the house and my new shop etc. Pearland is in a dry county and we are getting tired of the long drive to the old Krogers just up the road in Houston, so I decided to check out the closer Food Town store where I spotted boxes of parafin. "Cool" I says to self, and added a box to my cart.
When we got home I went to work on my son's Jet table saw/work surface. I think the contractors might have left the saw out in a brief rain one day awhile back and then must have moved it back inside still slightly wet before leaving for the day. Anyway it was looking kind of scruffy with patches of rust and who knows what on it, so I attacked it with the 3M pad, various cleaners and elbow grease. Got the top looking respectable. I finished it up with some of that parafin wax and rubbed it in and buffed it up nice. :>)
Did I mention that this has been primarily a work surface? Well a couple of days later I throw a piece of material up there and low and behold, it didn't stay put. Just skated across that smooth surface and landed with a crash on the other side giving the motor a good wack along the way. Woooops. :(
Well I had the chance to use the saw for it's intended purpose yesterday. After clearing away several days clutter (the clutter goblins must sneak in and do this at night) I ran some birch plywood through it. Wow, what a difference. Effortless is the best I can say to discribe it.
I'm lining up some planes to give the wax treatment to. :>)
