plane facts on planeing

>Thanks to all of the responses to my earlier post.It seems the consensus is that a polished back and finely honed edge are worth the effort. I have not purchased waterstones yet but I used 1200 grit abrasive paper and got the back to a reflective smoothness in about 20 min. on a shelton plane (cheapo). I smoothed the sole on a flat belt grinder and tightened the mouth(frog). It cut pine great, even some knots. I measured and a few shavings were about 1 to 2 thousandths. I am going to tighten mouth a little more and sharpen a little more. Do you think this will work on red oak? How ould I change the bed angle for hardwood. Do I need to change the grind or does the frog change to a steeper angle as I narrow the mouth?

Thanks,

Bob

>Most bench planes have the iron installed with the bevel down. You cannot change the angle that the iron hits the wood with these planes. The angle that you sharpen the blade at will determine how well the iron penetrates the wood and how long the iron stays sharp. General consensus is bench plane irons work well when sharpened at a 30° angle. Red oak planes easily with a sharp iron. With a dull iron it tends to tear out the wood in the spring growth rings and leaves a less than desirable surface. One thing you can do to easily upgrade any plane, even one as cheap as a Shelton, is to put a Hock iron in it. If you sharpen the iron good, you will be lost forever in curly world.

You almost certainly made it convex.

>Lee Valley (www.leevalley.com) has Hock irons as well as the Lee Valley A2 irons. I have 3 of the lee Valley irons and think they are great.

>The tool is the iron. Period. All the rest of the stuff is just the jig (or is is fixture? I always get the two confused) for holding the tool. So if you know how to fettle a plane ( see RJ's article ) They can all be made to work wonderfully if you use wonderful irons.
