OT: Block Buster vs Netflix

>A thread a couple weeks back wanted to know which way to go..

Up until Wednesday 10 days back I was with blockbuster since June 20th 2005. On Wednesday I was advised that my rate with them was going UP effective immediately and that I could continue to expect great service and many many promises of it will be better.

Bottom line was:

They were NOW as expensive as netflix

I did get two coupons for in the store

they had FIVE DAY turn around (two days mail each way after mailing)

fullfillment center was in Portland, Or

SO I dropped them like a rock:

Blockbuster then informed me I would continue to receive DVD's THROUGH 08-29-2005

QUOTE from their FAQ

You are still receiving DVDs because we allow you to continue your membership through the end of your billing cycle. If you feel the account may not have been canceled successfully or if you have any additional questions, please contact Customer Service at 1-866-692-2789 Monday through Friday 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM Central.

END QUOTE

Right after I cancel I notice I don't get my next cd shipped right out. Quick email to Customer Service and my CD is mysteriously on its way with no comment back.

So on the 17th I have TWO DVD's available to be shipped because my queue now only has one in it and I have a list of like 58 to choose from. It is now the 20th and NO DVD's have been shipped!

Crooked no good lying, dirty filthy, did I mention they lie?

My membership with Netflix was setup that morning. First DVD's arrived on Friday after shipping on Thursday (one day delay) and the fulfillment center is in Spokane, WA.

I get 3 day turn around, I find their site to be faster, easier to navigate. If I drop a movie in a box they have it by 9:00 am the next day and ship about 2:30 that afternoon. I HAVE the next day. So if I have time, I can watch about 2x as many Manly Man movies as I could with blockbuster, and I don't loose a whole week getting the kids a show.

They also have a cool feature where up to four seperate movie queues can be maintained by viewer, you can limit how many that queue can have out and the ratings available to that queue. Which I think is wonderfull for chick flicks and the kids.

Bottom line for me:

if they have a shipping center in your town, go with that one, but Netflix is superior.

Did I mention they have a few woodworking videos?

Did everyone know that only flat side bedrocks have the throat adjustment without blade removal?

>We live in a rural area, so cable is not available to us. If we wanted anything other than the regular three channels this area broadcasts freely, we would have to buy a sattelite dish or rent a system. Since I personally believe that watching a lot of tv is a bad use of time, plus spending the money for all those channels with nothing on just kind of riled me and I refuse to pay for cable or sattelite. Then Netflix came along, and I thought here is a different story. It costs us about $20 per month, roughly the same as cable, and we are not letting anything into the house that we wouldn't want our parents to know we are watching. This works well for me, and we no longer watch regular tv. I watch roughly 2 hours per day of tv in the evenings after my day is done and before I go to bed, which may be a waste of time but it is something my wife and I do together, and we laugh with each other a lot throughout the evening.

>With a ripoff amount of Comcast cable just to get DIY, for woodworking and scrapbooking shows, a pair of TIVO's, and now Netflix. I probably spend quite a lot more for TV entertainment than most of you out there. About $100 a month.

BUT with two kids, a wife, and myself, a movie runs over $40.00 because wife cannot stand to watch a movie without a half tub of popcorn going to waste, 2-3 huge pops that I drink 2 of so they don't go to waste. AND if the kids stay home, then we have to buy the babysitter pizza, spend $20.00 in sitting fees, nearly $30 in movies costs.

SO if I can make it to the movies once every couple of months instead of a couple times a month I am saving money.

TIVO initially for 2 years saved me quite a bit a month, because we didn't rent any more movies from blockbuster. Then we finally caught up on dozesn of shows as we watch a couple hours a night on the weekdays late to make sure the kids crash out.

Blockbuster/Netflix allows me to watch older TV series we always missed before without commercials too.

Can't speak for everyone, but I knew.

It has been argued that the earlier models have the most solid bedding of all, since the fixing screws work directly, instead of "roun the corner".

Cough, cough, splutter...! Oh really? You kept that quiet. Or have I been failing to pay attention again and can expect a link to The Porch archive describing the gory details? :~)
