blade retraction problem

>i sharpened the blades of my #4 and #5 planes last night but was unable to retract the blade enough to take off a THIN shaving. how do you fix this problem? do you have to set the chipbreaker BACK from the blade further? i set the chipbreaker so that the camber was in line with the blade's bevel.

>Frank,

You need to move the edge of the chipbreaker closer to the cutting edge of the blade. If you are more than about 1/16" away, that's probably too far. The blade adjuster on Bailey style planes connects to the chipbreaker. If you have the blade extending very far beyond the end of the chipbreaker, you won't be able to retract it fully.

Hope this helps,

Ted

>You say the chipbreaker is in line with the bevel. Does that mean you're installing the blade bevel up? if so, that's your problem.

The blade goes bevel down, and the chipbreaker nees to go out nearly to the edge - maybe 1/32" ~ 1/16" back from the edge.
