The "$1 each" box

Moses Yoder in White Pigeon, MI

>This weekend was White Pigeon garage sales weekend. I didn't realize it until Friday after work, on the way home I saw a number of garage sales, but was late enough that some were already shutting down. I mentioned tools to a guy and he directed me to a sale where he had seen some. A great old barn, full of rusty old stuff, and I ended up finding a Keen Kutter saw for $5. So I figured it was a good weekend. Saturday was our work day at my parent's house, so I couldn't just peruse all the sales, but took off around 8 in the morning figuring I'd be a little late to my parents but insisted on at least a few garage sales. It was pretty much like I figured, with people just getting up and around, and most sales having absolutely nothing that was worth a nickle. But there were a bunch of sales in a small area. I finally came to one where they were obviously cleaning out grandpa's shop after he passed on, probably a few years back. I looked through a number of boxes of miscellaneous bolts, and did find a square in good shape for a buck and a geniune "Vice Grip" pair of locking pliers for $2. While paying them I asked if they had any more tools they'd be selling, and they said they would be cleaning out the little barn out back but were waiting for their nephew to price stuff. I asked if there was any way I could take a glance at what they had, and was turned down. So I figured I missed out on the best deals of the weekend.

I went on down to my parents house, and about noon we ran into a snag where my dad didn't have the right router bit to do what we needed, and I would have to run home and get one. It's about 40 minutes drive , and I figured here was my chance to stop back at that sale. I pulled in just as the nephew was leaving. Unfortunately I saw nothing spectacular, but they did have a cardboard box full of rust and marked "$1 each". It was pretty intersting as I was obviously the first person to go through the box, and these tools hadn't been touched in years by anyone except the nephew pulling them out to get rid of them. I started sorting and setting stuff aside on a pile, and found some pretty good stuff. Nothing spectacular, of course, but it is a very good feeling to be the first tool hound going through the box. When I was done I had a pile of $21 worth of tools, which included a spoke shave wtih both straight and radius blades, very nice little adjustable wrench about 7" long, marking gauge, and the rest was mostly chisels and carving tools from small to large, but did include a very neat little 1/8" morticing chisel. A very good day.

Heck yeah, that 1/8 chisel alone will sell om e-bay in the $60-100 range I think. I got mine about a year ago for $1 as well. It was one of those monents where it was hard to keep myself calm while fishing for my wallet. I had forgot to ask for 50 cents I was so excited, but trying to hide it.

Got a buddy that stumbled into a nice nice Keen Kutter block plane. He called me over to look at while he was looking like the canary that just ate the cat. Asked the lady how much, she said $5 he pondered it for a bit, looked at it a little more, and said "Will you take $4?" sure she said. He's been hard to live with ever since. ;~)

Good haul Coop, and even greater that you was the first tool hound to see them. Would of been nice if you could of seen them in their Natural Habitat first tho eh.

"...1/8 chisel......on e-bay...$60-100" UH-OH!!

Cooper Suter

>Educate me,..... PLEASE!

Do 1/8" mortise chisels really command that premium consistently?

I just did a quick check on the bay, and saw one that went for $50ish (Buck Bros.), and one that went for $20ish (Karpenter?).

At $20 per, I feel alright, at $50 per, I think I really need to be pricing my chisels better.

Anyone see these prices holding true at shows and meets, or are they just one of those Ebay anomaly's?

>Mmm. I bought a 1/8" Pigsticker mortice chisel yesterday for $10 (AUD - about $6 USD) at the Perth Woodwork Show - sold by an tool collector! Makers name on the blade is "Mosborn, Southhampton". I came away with another at this price, a 3/8", made by "Hernehaw Bros, Sheffield". Both with full length blades and good condition.

English vs US(a short detour)

Bob Hackett

>Here in the US it seems the similar tools made in England sell for much less than the same US made tools. The most recent example of this that I`ve seen was at a yard sale by a local old tool merchant. He had 2 large trays of old laminated plane irons from England offered at $1 each.As I was paying for my selections he told me he had sold all his American irons at twice the price.Hard to figure as way back when all the tool steel used to laminate them came from the UK.

I`ve noticed the same thing on e-bay with wood planes, especially molding planes. The difference in price, even taking into account shipping, seems to indicate a strong preference for US makers.I wonder why that is.

>I have sold a 1/8 in. everlast on ebay befor for over $200. I do think that the small 1/8 in. mortice chisels go for a premium but I think Todd C is being a bit optimistic unless it was somthing special.Chisel prices right now are way down on ebay but even when they were cruising pretty high I would expect a good quality 1/8 in. mortice chisel to be lucky to hit $40 and more likely be a $25 or $30 chisel. If a Swann or witherby might could do better.....Is always hard to tell exactly when is a 1/8 in. chisel really a mortice chisel or just a long firmer. Not to sure if there is a difference really .....Todd

>Perhaps I might of been a bit optimistic, but I don't think so AND was running off of memory (uh-oh). Bottom line is that it is a very desireable tool and hard to find. I know I've seen some go for some pretty good money, but I really don't recall the makers marks. Length, condition and maker will have a huge impact on the selling $$$.

I think ya' still done good Coop, and if you sell it will make a huge profit. how can you not make a huge profit off of a $1 purchase?

>If I actually wanted to sell it I think I would ask $15 for it and hope to find a sucker. Unfortunately, I am a patsy for tools and so far have found myself unable to part with anything that has that simple beauty that is lacking in so many tools today.
