Value of Scholls marking gauge

Moses Yoder in White Pigeon, MI

>I have done several searches on the bay using different combinations and words without finding a Scholls marking gauge in completed auctions. Several google searches resulted in dead links from Martin Donnelly past auctions. I have a three arm Scholls gauge in what I woudl call good condition, and am trying to decide if I would want to trade it in for a nice fly rod and reel for steelhead and salmon fishing. I like to build my own rods, buying kits from Angler's Workshop. So if anyone could tell me what this guage is worth, I would appreciate it. Also, if you had a really nice tool and sold it to get something you thought you would want more, any regrets? I have about a dozen marking guages now I guess, but the Scholls is by far the best one.

All I can give you right now is a ball park number, and I'd say depending on condition and venue of sale, $175-$300. I've got catalogs and guides I could look in, but I'd have to get back to you.

I had a decent four arm that I sold a couple of years ago, and now regret, did my homework, and think I got $350ish. Sold it to a local, non-ebay looking knowledgable collector. If I'd pushed, maybe there was 10% more to be gotten out of it, but it was a no hassle sale to a personable and helpful local tool guy.

I think venue of sale is gonna be a big factor in what you get. For these decent but relatively common "good" tools, it's a time of flux thanks to Ebay pulling so many out and making them available. I'd try it @ Sindelar's meet or Darleys Barn. When's salmon season? Can it wait till the Chicago national?

Maybe Jim Crammond will chime in? He's one of those marking guage wierdos (not to mention Yankees, and Union planes) and should have a good feel for value.

In the few instances, when I can sell something for a good profit, and thenbuy something I'll be keeping, using, and enjoying having, it hasn't been a regretful situation for me. If I'd had to pay the mortgage, feed the kids, or put new tires on the truck w/the $, then I rue the sale.

>What i would do is figure what it would cost you to buy the fishing outfit,[ somthing that is probably easier then to find the worth of then the gage] and list the marking gauge on ebay with that as your reserve. If it sells on ebay you buy the rod set...and maybe have some $ left over. If it doesn't meet your reserve trade it to the rod guy knowing that you got a good deal....My suggestion....Todd
