Homemade tools

Lewis Lamb

>These are some homemade tools/tool handles that I've piddled with in the last few weeks. The mallet and router collect wrench are made out of padauk and maple. The X-acto knife handle is padauk. The screwdriver handle is padauk and yellowheart (at least, I think that's what it is). Most of the wood came from a sample pack I bought at Woodcraft a while back; the screwdriver bit holder is just an off-the-shelf Bosch bit holder I got at Lowe's for 3 bucks. I must admit that I was very pleased with the way they turned out, since these were the first things like this I've ever tried to make. I particularly like the screwdriver handle - it's way more comfortable to use than the typical store bought variety, and it was way cheaper than the $40+ LN version that I've envied for a while.

>Great idea on wood handle on router bit wrench. I have different wrenches for sander, angle grinder, saws, routers--all made from stamped metal. Where did you get rivet? Nice work.

>As you now know, nothing beats having tools fit your hand and work the way you want them to work.An added bonus is that making and modifying you own tools makes it seem as though anything is possible and it`s bound to show in the work these tools help you produce.

Great job!Welcome to perhaps the most slippery slope of them all.

>A quick source for rivets is round brass bar stock that you can buy at most hobby shops that carry stuff for model builders. Not the way to go if you are going to be making lots of rivets, due to the high price compared to industrial supply dealers like MSC and McMaster-Carr.

Collet Wrench

Lewis Lamb

>The "rivet" is actually just a piece of maple dowel. It started out a little oversized, and I clamped the wrench down and drove the dowel through the hole in the wrench handle. Then, I expoxied the wooden handle on and drove the dowel through the wooden part and chiseled it flush on both sides. The handle has never budged and it is 10X more comfortable and easier to use with the extra leverage than the original was; it does not, however, store in the slot on the top of the router anymore (always gotta give something up, I guess....).
