Great Customer Service

Hank Knight from SC

>A while back I ordered replacement irons and chipbreakers for several of my old Stanley planes from Lie-Nielsen. They arrived and are wonderful, except the chipbreaker for my #603 Bedrock was off. The slot for the blade advance pawl was too far from the edge, which meant that I couldn't retract the blade all the way into the body of the plane. I contacted Lie-Nielsen and told them the problem. They asked me to send them the specifications for the chipbreaker and said they would make me a custom one. I photocopied the original chipbreaker, added appropriate measurements and e-mailed the specs to Lie-Nielsen. They made me a custom job and sent it via UPS. The package arrived, but, alas, it was empty; someone had opened it, removed the chipbreaker and resealed the package with tape. Who would want such a thing - except an owner of a #603 Stanley Bedrock - of which I am one of maybe 3 in the whole state of South Carolina? Go figure. In any case, I reported the problem to UPS and called Lie-Nielsen. UPS did nothing, but last night a new custom chipbreaker arrived from Lie-Nielsen. No charge - even though I expressly told them I would be happy to pay for the missing one because it was probably taken form my porch where the first UPS delivery was left. On top of that, they only charged me the standard price for a #3 chipbreaker on the original invoice even though it was a completely custom made piece. I asked, and they said they don't charge extra for custom chipbreakers - at least not currently, but that practice may change. They get my vote as a great place to do business and they'll get more of my business in the future.

No affiliation, etc. Just a VERY satisfied customer.

>They did something similar for me... I asked them if they'd make me a custom chipbreaker for a transitional plane I'd been working on. it was an odd width, and the yoke hole was 1/4" back from where it normally would be. Took them about a week, cut one custom for me, no extra charge for the custom work. I was very impressed... no doubt about it, Lie-Nielsen rules.

LN Chipbreaker Data

Paul Benton

>For your info this is an excerpt from an email I received from LN on the dimensions of their chipbreakers having in the past had a similar problem with Clifton 2 piece version and not wanting to have a repeat.

My question was the "... the distance from the leading edge to the slot for the adjusting lever ..."

CB-1-5/8" is 3-1/8" from leading edge

CB-1-3/4" is 3-1/2" from leading edge

CB-2" is 3-1/2" from leading edge

CB-2-3/8" is 3-13/16" from leading edge

CB-2-5/8" is 3-13/16" from leading edge

Having measured my the chipbreakers in my planes, some fit and some don't. I get the feeeling that Stanley looked into their cyrstal ball and said right "lets make this hard"

>Thanks for the info. I should have asked the question and done some measurements before I ordered. I've had trouble with the 1 3/4s and the 2s. Everything else works O.K. Oddly, the 2" chipbreaker works fine on my Jack, but doesn't on my 604. I think you're right about Stanley's crystal ball and twisted sense of humor.

>I have a new LN chipbreaker for my No 4 that has the same issue, I figured on buying a diamond bit and diamond file from harbor and having at it.
