Saw handle refurb

Steve Kubien

>Morning everyone,

There has been a bunch on making saw handles lately, so I have a question.... Is quarter-sawn oak a good choice to use? I've got a few small pieces lying around which aren't big enough for much else.

Thanks,

Steve Kubien

A bit coarse and large-pored for handles, I'd have said.

>Hi Steve,

As Bugbear pointed out, it's not the best choice. The more traditonal beech and apple are finer grained and hold detail well.

OTOH if you haven't made a saw handle before - why not give it a try? If nothing else consider it a practice piece. Make it and then see what about it you like and don't like - what works and doesn't work for you. Far be it from me to discourage someone from making a saw handle!

>I think it would be a poor choice, believe it would split easy as well as splinter prone. This is one of those things where you are using just a small bit of wood while putting a good bit of time into it so why use somthing that might not work? Apple is the tradtional wood alomg with beech on cheaper [and English] saws. Imagine maple might be a good choice to and easy to find.....Todd

>I've used maple as well. I just did one with sycamore that worked out well.
