Dean,
How does that work having your vise on the right-hand end rather than the usual left side? I can see some advantages by having the crochet and bench dogs more accessible. Are there other points I'm missing (that I should be smart enough to realize on my own?) How much use do the clamping devises get in a percent? Half/half or more use in one system than the other?
To be honest, you could take that vise off my bench and it would take me a while to even notice. Really, it is nice to have for case sides, but you can do the same with the crochet and a clamp. In fact I just finished up doing just that for a case with 24" sides, my vise only has 24" on center between the screws so I couldn't use the twin screw to clamp the sides to cut the dovetails. "Regular" case sides fit well between the screws.
As far as percent usage... It ends up being very low in my current work. If I were a chair builder that may be different (or I'd have a decent shave horse in that case). But for case work, and mortise and tenon work I only use it for cutting the dovetails, and tenons. In both cases the crochet and a holdfast or clamp would serve.
While it is nice, you can do an awful lot without it.
On the other hand, you'd have to pry my holdfasts and battens out of my hands. I would not give them up without a fight. They are the essence of the bench.
