Plans for Secretary

Frank Mutchler in Colorado Springs

>Now that a local hardwood supplier is stocking 4/4 quarter sawn white oak I'd like to build something special for LOML. Can someone point me in the direction of quality plans for the piece commonly referred to as a 'Secretary'? Thanks.

However, it wasn't what I was expecting from the class description of "secretary."

>I don't know how familiar you are with his work, but if you can find a copy (ebay often has them for very little $$) I *believe* Franklin Gottshall's book "Simple Colonial Furniture" has a slant-top secretary in it. I'm not sure - I have a copy of it around here somewhere, but can't find it at the moment - I think I remember a secretary in it. You might want to check to be sure. According to http://www.biblio.com/books/10215410.html it does...

Gottshall was an apprentice of Wallace Nutting's, and wrote many books of plans for classic furniture - well worth it IMO just for viewing the construction details. You could maybe then interpret those plans to fit your needs...

>Frank,

Not sure if this is what you had in mind but here's the one I'm building right now. Not totally by hand mind you, but so far about equal muscle and electrons. Had to change a few things like substituting the biscuits in the plan for M&T's, but I think it's a nice looking piece.

Cheers,

Kerry

>Frank-- Last year FWW had an article on making a Chippendale secretary with Lonnie Bird as the author. Traditionally what was called a secretary was made up of two parts stacked on top of each other- a desk and a bookcase.

>Frank -

In addition to the Lonnie Bird article, FWW has visited the subject several times over the years. Monte Burch has a simple plan in "How to build 50 Classic Furniture Reproductions". Jeff Greene has an exploded view of a Newport Secretary in his book "American Furniture ..."
