Re: GX shaker box finger detail
John Clifford
>This is a close-up of the fingers of box 3. Probably the hardest part of making the boxes is getting the fingers cut and beveled to the shape you want. The fingers on my boxes were pretty unsymetrical and kind of unattractive so when I got home I used a chisel to pare the fingers to the shape I wanted. I'm very pleased with the results. The boxes are finished with danish oil and a little sunlight.
Very Nice John

>for a first attempt I think these boxes look great! So what you had to doctor up the fingers afterwards, you're still on the learning curve, and you got them looking good in the end. I've never made a Shaker Box, and I'm assuming that up to this point neither had you, so would you really have to say that there is more to it than meets the eye? In other words, not as easy as you thought.
What does the #'s mean, as in Size #3?
Looks like I know what you'll be giving out as Christmas gifts this year eh? ;~)

>Thanks Todd. Believe it or not they are much easier than you would think and the process is very forgiving. And you're right, this is my first attempt as it was for everyone in the class I believe. And yes, I'll be making a lot more, firstly because I'm hooked and secondly they'll make great christmas presents, especially for my Mother and Father-in-law since they're woodworking folk and they're in the habit of giving woodworking x-mas presents also (mostly scroll sawn).

>Oh yeah, the #3 is a size. It's the largest of the three shown. It's approximately 7 1/4 l, 4 7/8 w, and 2 3/4 tall. It's a convenient size but they do get much bigger.
Very nice boxes John

>For a first attempt I'd be very proud if I were you. They look great. I always wanted to try my hand at making some. You just gave me a kick it the butt to get on one or two...soon.
Excellent job and thanks for sharing.
