Rehabbing a wooden smoother
Skip in Falls Church
>I'm in the process of inserting a mouth patch in an old wooden coffin smoother. I'd gotten partway through the process when I realized the front end of the smoother is not as "tall" as the back. IOW when looking at the side of the smoother the front is shorter than the back - by about 1/4 or 3/8 inch. (Obviously the front has worn over time more than the back.) As wooden planes are normally built so as to avoid running against the grain as you are using the plane, should I "relevel" the sole so that the grain would be closer to the orginal orientation? If I need to do that should I do it now or after I've inserted the mouth patch?
